15 year old boy escapes kidnap attempt, one abductor lynched

Tura, August 2: A 15-year-old escaped a kidnapping attempt today, while one of the abductor was lynched to death in Meghalaya’s remote market of Janglapara, near Tikrikilla in West Garo Hills.  Tikrikilla is about 115 km from Tura.

At about 8:30 am, Nazirul Islam from neigbouring Goalpara district along with a friend was proceeding towards Janglapara market, when four armed miscreant attacked them.

Islam and his friend were on a motorbike.

The armed miscreant thrashed Islam’s friend, who was riding.  There was heated commotion as the miscreant and the two had a scuffle.

“After hearing screaming noise, we came to rescue them”, said Jakram Rabha, a youth from the village.

As people gathered near the spot the abductor made an attempt to flee, however, one of them was caught. He was lynched to death.

The deceased miscreant has been identified as Jecky R. Marak.

Islam and his friend were from Gaibandha village, near Lakhipur in Assam’s Goalpara district.

An FIR has been launched. Police is investigating the matter.

In the last two months, kidnapping cases has been on the rise in Garo hills.

Till July 31 this year, at least 110 people were abducted for ransom, which included government employees, businessmen, teachers, traders, women and children. In May this year, fifteen abductions took place in Garo hills, in June – July, at least 30.

Figure points out that law and order situation has totally collapsed. Such a large number of abduction cases has not been reported from anywhere in the country.

Police say that most of the people were abducted for financial gain. Of which, few cases were informed to police, rest were negotiated by the family with the kidnapers.
