Shillong, June 17: Concerned with the rise in two wheeler riding by minors, Shillong Traffic Police conducted a special drive during the week. During the drive, 261 cases were detected out of which 19 cases were underage riders, 17 cases were riders with learner license but not accompanied with a person with a valid license.
In case of underage riding the parents or guardians were summoned to the thana and penalize with a fine. A total of Rs. 89,500/- was realized as fine. This is in addition to other regular fines imposed for other traffic violations by other violators.
In this connection , it is to be reminded that owners of a vehicles who allow a minor to drive his/her motor vehicle is liable U/S 180 Motor Vehicle Act, 1988 with imprisonment for a term which may extend to 3(three) months or with fine which may extend to Rs.1000/- (Rupees one thousand) or with both.
Further a holder of a learners license has to be accompanied with a person who possess a valid driving license.
