Dr Mukul inaugurates Citizen Portal under CCTNS, flags off Highway Patrols

Shillong, September 15: Chief Minister Dr. Mukul Sangma launched the Citizen Portal under Crime & Criminal Tracking Network & Systems (CCTNS) project and also flagged off the Highway Patrols along with Minister for Home (Police) etc H.D.R Lyngdoh at an impressive programme held at the Police Headquarters, here on Thursday evening.

Chief Secretary K.S.Kropha, Director-General, NCRB, New Delhi, Radhakrishna Kini, DGP, Meghalaya S.B.Singh and other Police officials of various ranks and file were present on the occasion besides many others.

The Citizen Portal would enable the citizens to register their complaints or send information over the internet and they will also be able to modify or view the registered complaint and track its status online. The portal will further be expanded to include domestic help and tenant verification, passport verification services, general service requests such as permission for processions/rallies, etc. In due course the portal is expected to become effective vehicle of public delivery of various police services and enable responsible citizens to assist the Police in prevention and detection of crimes. The Highway Patrols would help to strengthen police units located along the National Highways to ensure quick and effective response particularly in the high crime prone areas and accident prone areas. These highway patrols, strategically placed along the vulnerable stretches can enable quick response by authorities to assist commuters in distress on account of accidents or crimes or medical emergencies. Six of such highway patrols for Garo Hills and another six for Khasi and Jaintia Hills were flagged on the occasion.

Addressing the gathering, Chief Minister, Dr Mukul M Sangma said that the demand of the time is for modern and technology backed policing. Stating that Meghalaya is a state where the citizens are vigilant and alert there is a need to ensure policing is transparent and people friendly and that government has also been able to create an enabling environment to meet the challenges of providing safety and security to the citizens. He added that there is also a need to create a self regulated society with a strong deterrence to crime and fear of the law.

“The launch of Citizen Portal will be an effective mechanism for expeditious investigation and charge sheeting by police to ensure that justice is nor denied or delayed,” he said. The Chief Minister also felt the need to strengthen the internal security apparatus both at the state and the national level and such technology backed solutions and support will enable the police department to further achieve its objectives and responsibilities effectively. Saying that there is a necessity for continuous auditing of the capacity and commitment level, he urged the gathering to respond to the call of duty with utmost sincerity, commitment and honesty.

Home Minister H.D.R. Lyngdoh, who also spoke on the occasion applauded the role the State police saying that Meghalaya Police was one of the best and most capable forces in the country and called greater cooperation of all to regain the reputation of being one of the most peaceful states in the country. DG, NCRB, New Delhi Radhakrishna Kini and State DGP S.B.Singh also addressed the occasion, while the citizens’ representative, Dr. B. Nongrum spoke of the need for promoting better police-public relations.
