Employees of CEST approached political leaders to retain Commissioner’s office in Shillong

Shillong, June 05: The employees of the Customs, Central Excise and Services Tax, under the banner of the Meghalaya Staff Welfare Committee (MSWC) today hold their half an hour protest in front of their office  in Shillong protesting the proposal of the central Government to shift this office from Shillong to Guwahati.

One of the senior staff of  the commissioner’s office Mr PK Sen who led the protests said that from the committee they have approaches all political parties in the state of Meghalaya, the Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma, the MP from Tura Mr Conrad Sangma the BJP leaders and others political leaders to asked the central government to retain this head office in Shillong.

This office was functioning from Shillong since 1944 till date, in the year 2002 there is a proposal to shift to Guwahati but they have protest and the central Government has listen to them and retain back in Shillong  but suddenly the central government want to shift to Guwahati and the notification is likely to be issued in the few coming days.

The total employees of this office in Shillong has the total strength of  195 staff  including the officer and the casual worker who have served in this office more than ten years are 65 in numbers. If the office is shifted to Guwahati the 65 numbers of casual employees will remain jobless.

If this office is shifted to Guwahati the main suffer will be the local women, in the matrilineal society where women have to look after their children’s and to their age old parents will be hit hard. The reason for retaining this office in 2002 is due to their appeal to the central government on this ground.
