Tura, June 10: Meghalaya’s opposition leader, Donkupar Roy has drawn flak for his comment “complications of fighting Garo terrorist by a Garo leader, by Garo police” from the Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA).
A top cadre of the outfit, Savio Marak today said, “Donkupar Roy is provoking the Garos”. Roy had made the remark in the floor of the
assembly on Friday last.
The outfit has reiterated that chief minister Mukul Sangma is not a Garo, as his mother is a non-tribal. “Sangma’s authenticity of being a Garo is still not confirmed by the court”, said Marak.
“GNLA condemn Donkupar Roy’s observation and ask the people to know and believe that Mukul Sangma is not a Garo”, the statement further
said.
Recalling the incident of 30 September, 2005, where nine people lost their lives in twin firing incident at Tura and Williamnagar, the outfit said, “Mukul has been a silent observer and has instigated the community. The deteriorating condition of ‘Law & Order’ in Meghalaya, especially Garo Hills is not because the leaders, the police and the militants are all Garos, but the fact is completely opposite to the claims made by Donkupar Roy”.
The outfit was all out to blame Mukul Sangma for the utter chaos in Garo hills. “Though the GNLA comprises of all Garo men, the police and leaders are not. The recent vote-count of the Lok Sabha election proves that
against all odds, almost all the non-tribals were with Mukul and to make the matter worst, the last Police recruitment saw an over whelming number of non-tribals, contrary to Donkupar Roy’s statement. The Garo militants are up against the growing non-tribal interests”,
said Marak.
The outfit also asked politicians to study the ground realities of Garo hills before making any comment. “GNLA is a responsible organization and the motive has always been “‘Garoland’ within the ambit of the Indian Constitution, not against it’, as put by our respected Chairman, Champion R. Sangma in the past”, the statement also added.(SP News)
