If we do not adapt to this climate change, people will be seriously affected: Banwarilal

Shillong, June 30: A 3-day Media Workshop on Climate Change Reporting which kickstarted from 28th June, 2017 concluded today at the State Convention Centre, Shillong. The Governor of Meghalaya, Shri Banwarilal Purohit graced the valedictory function as Chief Guest.

The Workshop was jointly organized by the Indian Himalayas Climate Adaptation Programme (IHCAP) of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India in collaboration with Meghalaya Climate Change Centre (MBDA), Government of Meghalaya and the Centre for Media Studies (CMS).

Addressing the gathering, the Governor said that during the past two decades there has been a considerable deterioration of natural resources in the State which has caused negative impact on the farming community of the State which accounted to 70% of the population. If we do not adapt to this climate change, the livelihood of the people will be seriously affected, he added.

Stating that there is a need to organise climate change adaptation programmes in the community so that people will be made aware about the climate change phenomenon, the Governor added that as a fourth pillar of democracy, media has an important role to play in sensitizing the people about the impact of climate change and at the same time highlighting the various programmes organised to this effect.

During the programme, the Governor along with other dignitaries released the IHCAP Science Briefs.Earlier, Ms. Shimpy Khurana, Communication Officer, IHCAP and Dr. S. Ashutosh, IFS, Addl. PCCF, Dy CEO, MBDA & Nodal Officer Climate Change Meghalaya gave an overview of Media Workshops and the Climate Change Programmes in Meghalaya respectively.

Chief Secretary to the Government of Meghalaya, Shri Y. Tsering was also present at the valedictory function. Head, CMS Advocacy, Ms. Annu Anand delivered the Welcome Address while the Vote of Thanks was proposed by Ms. Ritika Kapoor, Research Executive, Centre for Media Studies.
