Shillong, November 15: The KHNAM youth wing today had submitted the memorandum to the Chief Minister of Meghalaya Dr Mukul Sangma who is holding finance portfolio, asking him that the government to implement supreme Court ruling equal pay for equal work.
The memorandum, KHNAM said that, in a significant verdict, the Supreme Court has held that the principle of “equal pay for equal work’ has to be made applicable to those engaged as daily wagers, casual and contractual employee who perform the same duties as the regulars.
The Supreme Court has also termed the denial of equal pay for equal work as “exploitation enslavement”, “Oppressive suppressive” and “Coercive”. The apex court said that in a welfare state, the principle has to be extended to temporary employee as well.
It was also said that anyone who is compelled to work at a lesser wage, does not do so voluntarily. He does so to provide food and shelter to this family, at the cost of his self-respect and dignity, at the cost of his self-worth and at the cost of his integrity; for he knows that his dependents would suffer immensely, if he does not accept the lesser wage.
Any act of paying fewer wages, as compared to others similarly situated, constitutes an act of exploitative enslavement, emerging out of a domineering position.
KHNAM stated that the state of Meghalaya constitute a large number of employee employed on temporary and contractual basis in various directorates and offices, and as it is known that for the past many years various of pay between the temporary and regular employee have been a setback for many families in the state.
The KHNAM asked the Chief minister to kindly intervene for fast track and proper implementation of the Supreme Court verdict of “Equal Pay for Equal Work” in the state and in all the institutions so that all employee weather engaged on regular or temporary basis are paid equally.
