SHILLONG, Aug 12: The Khasi Student Union (KSU) Nongtrai Unit on Friday stormed the LAFARGE office located at Polo, demanding employment for local youths of Nongtrai village in its limestone factory.
Speaking to reporters, Trulywell Lyngdoh general secretary KSU Nongtrai Unit said, “We have come here to demand employment for the local residents of Nongtrai village in the limestone factory operated by LAFARGE however they have instructed us to also invite headmen of the region to discuss on the matter.”
Expressing concern that the company is employing people from outside the state rather than employing the locals, he said, “We demand that the company should employ the locals in posts which they are able to work and not in posts which they are unable to work.”
There are around 547 employees in the company in which most of them are from outside the state he alleged. He also said that after the meeting with one of the senior member of the company they have come to the understanding that they will meet again on coming Friday in the presence of the village headman to solved out the issue of employment.
