Lafarge Umiam Mining Pvt. Limited should employ local residents of Nongtrai village:KSU

Shillong, August  21: The Khasi Student Union (KSU) South West Khasi Hills District on Sunday extended its support towards the demands made by KSU Nongtrai Unit that Lafarge Umiam Mining Pvt. Limited (LUMPL) should employ local residents of Nongtrai, East Khasi Hills District in its firm.

“We have decided to support our counterpart since the Union has learned that the demand of employment by the residents of Nongtrai village and the need for the people to get a copy of the signed agreement between the Dorbar shnong Nongtrai and LUMPL is genuine,” Bhalang Kharbani, Secretary Employment and Development Cell of KSU SWKH said in a statement issued here.

The Union has condemned LUMPL for its alleged involvement in employing outsiders rather than employing the locally qualified residents of Nongtrai village.

“The inability of LUMPL to produce legal documents of all the 547 employees in its firm clearly shows that the firm has evaded the regulations of Law by appointing people without proper documents like Labour and Work Permit of the state government,” he said.

The Union further stated that the unwillingness by the concern party to give a copy each of the signed agreement between LUMPL and the Dorbar shnong to the residents of Nongtrai village indicates the cheap tactics to hide the truth from the general public.

The KSU South West Khasi Hills District has applauded the efforts of its counterpart from Nongtrai village in fighting and demanding for the rights of the people.
