Lou Majaw has been conferred the fourth Bhupen Hazarika National Award

Guwahati, July 08: Shillong-based legendary singer and musician Lou Majaw has been conferred the fourth Bhupen Hazarika National Award. Instituted by Sarhad, a Pune-based socio-cultural organisation that works in the frontier regions including Northeast and Jammu and Kashmir had instituted this award in 2011 in the memory of Bhupen Hazarika, and gives it to persons from the Northeastern region who have made significant contributions towards the region at the national and international level, particularly through various forms of mass communication and media. The award is also intended at creating a cultural bond between Maharashtra and the Northeastern region.

Informing this, Sanjay Nahar, president of Sarhad said in a press release from Pune that the prestigious award will be given away at a colourful function in Pune in October. The award carries Rs 51,000 in cash, a trophy and a citation. The earlier three winners are eminent film-maker Jahnu Barua, noted theatre personality Ratan Thiyam and veteran journalist Samudra Gupta Kashyap.

Born on April 14, 1947, Lou Majaw picked up the guitar in 1955 and has, over the decades become a legend. Last year he completed half-a-century of singing.
