Shillong, August 12: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) under the leadership of Daniel Khyriem (president), Bansharai Warjri (organising secretary) and Donald V. Thabah (education secretary) on Friday met D. P. Wahlang (commissioner of education) demanding the immediate scrapping of the proposal of the central government to issue scholarship only towards those students having an Aadhar number.
In the meeting the Commissioner of Education informed that the notification with regards to the Aadhar number on availing scholarships has been directed from various central government departments like the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, Ministry of Minority Affairs, Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, Ministry of Human Resource & Development etc.., and the duty of the state government is to inform the students.
Wahlang further informed that the state government will soon write to all the central departments to immediate cease its proposed plan to associate scholarship with Aadhar number in the state of Meghalaya.
Mr Wahlang told KSU to link to Aadhar number for availing scholarships is a Direction from Government of India, through various ministry. From the state government soon will write to them to exempt Meghalaya from the preview of Aadhar.
