Shillong, June 28: The North East Students’ Organisation (NESO), comprising of the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), All Assam Students’ Union (AASU), Naga Students’ Federation (NSF), Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP), Twipra Students’ Federation (TSF), All Manipur Students’ Union (AMSU), Garo Students’ Union (GSU) and All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union (AAPSU) representing eight major students’ movements of the seven states of the North East Region, is expressing its strong resentment at the humiliation that a Khasi lady, Kong Tailin Lyngdoh, has to undergo at the Delhi Golf Club in which she was asked to leave in the middle of her lunch just because she was wearing a jainsem which is her traditional attire.
This primitive and cruel act of the officials of this Delhi Golf Club is not just an insult to this particular Khasi lady but an offence to the entire Khasi race and this reflects the mindset and attitude that they have towards the people of the North Eastern region and this can also be termed as ‘ignorance at its worst’. NESO would also like to remind that this is not an isolated incident but people from the North East have been facing insults, harassments, intimidations, assaults in different parts of mainland India which often proved to be fatal even resulting in death just because we dress, look, eat, talk differently.
People in mainland India should understand that India is not a homogenous country and should not expect us to ape the so called majority but we are proud of our own distinct identity, our dress, our food habits, our way of life and we will not allow anyone to try and enforce otherwise. The people of North East are already feeling alienated due to the step motherly treatment of the different governments at the centre and these kinds of incidents will only alienate the people further if no corrective steps are taken said Mr Samuel Jyrwa Chairman of the NESO in the press statement today.
