Shillong, May 26: The 6th Annual Convocation of the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) Shillong was held on May 24th at Sri. Aurobindo Institute of Indian Culture, Shillong.
Altogether 60 graduating students were awarded with degrees in Two undergraduate programmes namely Bachelor of Design in Accessory Design and Bachelor of Desing in Fashion Design and One post graduate discipline namely Master of Fashion Management. Special awards were also conferred to nominated students in categories like NIFT Best Academic Performance Award, NIFT Award for Meritorious Student and NIFT Student of the Year Award.
The function was graced by the Vice Chancellor of North Eastern Hill University Prof. S.K. Srivastava as the Chief Guest in the presence of Dr. Shailendra Chaudhari, Managing Director of NERCORMP as the Guest of Honour.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Srivastava congratulated the graduating students of NIFT Shillong and hoped that they will become the new torch bearers in the field of Design, fashion and management.
“The fashion industry is highly competitive and fashion designers should try to adopt a non – linear approach and to be disruptive in order to create their own niche in the market”, he said.
He lauded the Ministry of Textiles under the honorable Union Minister of Textiles Smt. Smriti Irani for ushering in a fresh dynamism and energy to the textile sector of the country through various initiatives and for the efforts to popularize Indian traditional and ethnic textile.
Earlier, the Director of NIFT Shillong, Col. Subroto Biswas (Retd.) gave a brief presentation on the Annual Report of NIFT Shillong for the year 2016 – 17.
A showcase of products made by the students from the Accessory Design and a fashion show titled “Fashionova” was organized after the Convocation Event and drew a large number of audiences.The Convocation’17 was concluded with the Vote of Thanks by CA Mrinal Sajwan, Joint Director I/c of NIFT, Shillong.
