Tura, July 31: Meghalaya chief minister, Mukul Sangma took great pride
and honour as he inaugurated the first higher secondary section for
Science course at Ampati Government Higher Secondary School in South
West Garo Hills.
Sangma passed out his matriculation from this very school.
“I am a proud product of this School”, he told a huge gathering as he
inaugurated the newly constructed buildings for Science and Arts
stream.
He told that the government had embarked upon a very ambitious
programme in 2011 to set up five government higher secondary schools
for science stream, which is being cherished this year.
“All the five institution are located in remote areas to cater to the
needs of the underprivileged children of the state, who cannot afford
to move out of their district”, he added.
He informed that the government will set up institutes and will
upgrade existing ones, which can offer courses in Science and Commerce
streams, besides introducing residential schools in every district of
the state.
He also announced a slew of initiatives to improve education scenario
in the state, which will include setting up of College of Science and
Commerce in different parts of the state, higher secondary schools for
science and commerce stream, and special scholarship for students who
would take up higher studies in the field of basic science at
graduation and master level.
“Our children are first generation students, so they need monitoring
and handholding. It will be an endeavor of the government to start the
residential schools to help our children, who have to be groomed”, he
said.
He told that the Asian Development Bank and Japan Fund have sanctioned
over 800 cr for investments in education sector in Meghalaya.
“We have changed the manner in the allotment of funds for government
department. Our strategy is to ensure that we will upscale our
children’s career”, he said.
Speaking at length on the need to offer quality education, he asked
the teachers in government schools and colleges to deliver
effectively. “Why are the parents not confident of sending their
children to government institution?” he asked.(SP News)
