The proposal of Unification of insurgent groups in Garo hills By GNLA’s turned down by UALA

Tura, March 31: The United National Liberation Army (UALA) today
turned down the idea of unification of insurgent groups mooted by Garo
National Liberation Army (GNLA).
The GNLA had mooted on Saturday for unification of all outfits for
addressing their demands, which is creation of a separate Garoland
state, carved out of Meghalaya.
In a statement to the media, UALA’s chairman, Chiindik Marak said, “We
will never welcome the proposal of the GNLA, unless and until they
initiate a discussion on separate state”.
Marak said, “We are dedicated, humble and responsible soldiers
fighting for Garo people’s rights. We will support the peace process,
if government makes their intention clear on the issue of separate
state”.
GNLA had proposed unification of all Garo hills based outfits under
the banner of Garo United Liberation Front (GULF).
GNLA C-in-C, Sohan D Shira had said, “The centre and state government
have opened the door for peace talks. We should unite to fight for our
common goal. I urge all outfits to stop hatred against each other and
come on a same platform”.
It may be noted that GNLA had recently declared to eliminate their deserters.
This was retaliated by UALA, who had said, “All other insurgent groups
will come together to fight off GNLA”.
GNLA is one of the most active outfits in Garo hills as of now. Many
of its deserters have floated new outfits, saying that GNLA has “no
ideology”.
Sohan Shira believes that if all outfits work together, people will
have faith on their movement.(SP News)
