Shillong, Aug 15: Although the security situation in the Garo Hills districts remains a cause of concern, the success of the security forces in the operations against the militants and the criminal elements has been commendable in the recent months.
The problems posed by decades old militancy are complex in nature and can only be addressed effectively through a multipronged approach by looking at the root cause. These problems have also been posing serious challenges to many of our neighbouring North Eastern States, particularly States having porous international border with our neighbouring countries.
Hence, there is a need for a co-ordinated approach along with active support from the Central Government to tackle the problem of militancy effectively. Government of India has already approved the Agreed Text of Settlement and the Ministry of Home Affairs has intimated that a date for signing of the Memorandum of Settlement between the Central Government, the State Government and ANVC would be indicated soon.(SP News)
