The Shillong Lajong FC loses their second game in the Hero I-League 2016-17

Shillong  January 14: The Shillong Lajong FC loses their second game in the Hero I-League 2016-17 season against Mohun Bagan by 2-0 in Kolkata on Friday.

It was an entertaining match as both teams were not shy in attack however Darryl Duffy was clinical in his finishing and ensured all three points for home side Mohun Bagan with a brace.

Lajong made a good start to the game with the intent to go forward. Mohun Bagan forward trio of Darryl Duffy, Balwant Singh and Yusa Katsumi tested Lajong’s defence early in the game but lacked in the midfield. Lajong’s Yuta Kinowaki and Zodingliana had a lot of space in midfield and moved the ball well to the forwards and wingers.

Mohun Bagan took the lead in the 21st minute through Darryl Duffy who received a long ball and successfully took on the defence to beat the keeper. Lajong however did not hold back as they pressed forward looking for the equaliser. Fabio should have scored twice in the first half for Lajong but his headers were not on target.

The second half was dominated by Lajong in possession however they failed to capitalise on the chances created. Rupert Nongrum replaced Bipin Singh in the second half and made an impact on the right wing backing up Nim Dorjee against Yusa Katsumi and at the same time adding value in attack.

Lajong’s forward, Dicka was tripped in the 54th minute inside the box but the referee did not award the penalty appealed by the Lajong players. Even though Mohun Bagan were more on the defensive in the second half, they capitalised on their chances in the 77th minute after Duffy was left alone inside the box to easily beat Vishal Kaith.

Lajong’s performance looked promising but they will have to improve to earn their first points in the new I-league season as they head to Aizawl to play their next away match on 17th January 2017.
