Shillong, May 27: A one day sensitization programme on the “Basic Disaster Management Concepts” for Junior Engineers, Block Functionaries, Gram Sevaks and Gram Sevikas was organized by Meghalaya Administrative Training Institute,(MATI), Meghalaya Shillong in collaboration with the District Disaster Management Authority,(DDMA), Nongstoin on 26th May 2016.
The objective of the training programme is to acquaint the Block field functionaries on the various aspect on Disaster Management their roles pre , during and post disaster situations .The Programme was inaugurated by Shri J. P. Lakiang ADC cum Chief Executive Officer, DDMA, Nongstoin.
In his address, he spoke on the need to seriously pay attention to Weather warnings and forecasts that eliminate from the forecasting agencies like the India Meteorological Department (IMD), so as to be ready to face any kind of eventuality should a disaster occur. He also enlightened the audience of the fact that the agencies are able to forecast weather conditions to a certain extent as they have proper data collection and observatories from other sources. Further he emphasized on the need of such training especially for the Block Disaster Response Teams as it will enable them to response effectively and evaluate the damage assessment in a timely manner so as to ensure immediate relief to the affected families.
The training touched on Concepts of Disaster Management, Salient Features of the DM Act 2005, Weather Warnings and Forecast, Damage Assessment of Houses, Damage Assessment of Agricultural and Horticultural Crops .The Training was imparted by Shri P. Marbaniang , Resource Person , MATI, Shillong, Shri Remdor Dkhar, Horticulture Development Officer (FP) Nongstoin, Shri R. Lyngdoh , Asst Enforcement Inspector, Revenue Branch, Nongstoin and Mr Jonathan Mawthoh ADPO, DDMA, Nongstoin .
