About 200 Muga farmers from Resubelpara and Mendipathar took part in the Mela 2022

Shillong, Dec 17: The Muga Vanya Krishi Vigyan Mela-2022 held in Mendipathar- Resubelpara, December 16, 2022: With the aim to promote Muga culture in North Garo Hills district and to create awareness on the significance of Muga silk production.

The Muga Eri Silkworm Seed Organisation (MESSO), Central Silk Board, Ministry of Textiles Govt. of India organised a Muga Vanya Krishi Vigyan Mela-2022 at P4 Unit, Mendipathar on  Friday.

About 200 Muga farmers from Resubelpara and Mendipathar took part in the event. Gracing the occasion as the chief guest, Deputy Commissioner, Shri R. P Marak (IAS) said he was glad to be a part of the fair where exchange of information on the scope of intensifying Muga silk production would take place between the region’s Muga farmers and the MESSO.

He added that the programme would bridge the gap between the silkworm rearers and the scientists of CSB in terms of scientific mechanisms involved in the silk production.

With the local silkworm farmers being passionate about Muga culture as well as the business of Muga-end products being on high demand, the DC urged the farmers to develop a coordinated approach among the scientists so as to boost the silk production in the region.

The Zonal Sericulture Officer, Smt. SanreG.Momin who was the  guest of honour  of the event said “this mela will be beneficial to all the stakeholders of silk farming with the hope that the scientists will highlight improved methods on how to rear silkworms and how to produce good quality silk”.

She also added that through this fair there would be a good relationship between the farmers, the state sericulture department and the CSB. Meghalaya is one of the hubs of silk farming in the country as the practice of Muga culture.

Its has been for years therefore owing to the potential scope of Muga culture in the state the CSB intends to introduce various schemes for the welfare of the Muga farmers, informed Shri M. Majumdar Scientist-C, MESSO, Mendipathar.

Other dignitaries who spoke during the event was Sr. Rose K. Kara, Secretary Mendipathar Co. Operative Society. Dr Prabhat Borpuzari Scientist-D & Head MESSO, CSB, Guwahati preside over the inaugural programme.

Inaugural address given by Dr.B.N Sarkar, Scientist-D .Earlier, Deputy Commissioner along with the CSB Scientists inaugurated the Muga Exhibition where varieties of Muga-end products were put up for display.

During the programme a pamphlet on Package of Practices of Muga culture was released by the DC and the awards were also distributed to the local progressive farmers who have contributed in the production of Muga silk in the district.

The programme was followed by a technical session highlighting the problems on Muga farming which was deliberated by Dr. L Guha, Scientist-C and Dr. V Kumar, Scientist-B. The programme ended by vote of thanks given by Dr. Hridya H. Scientist-C.
