Shillong, July 02: Craze for Indian saris in the Bangladesh has led to a thriving sari smuggling along the India-Bangladesh International border in Meghalaya. But the watchful Border Security Force (BSF) always foils such attempt of smugglers.
The BSF troops once again showing alertness on Indo-Bangladesh border seized two huge consignment of clothes while being smuggled into Bangladesh from India. The vigilant BSF troops deployed at Muktapur in West Jainti Hills district of Meghalaya observed 8 to 10 miscreants carry 7 to 8 packets on head moving towards International Border.
They immediately rushed towards the spot to verify the activity. The persons who were attempting to cross the packets to Bangladesh on seeing BSF troops ran away. The BSF troops searched and recovered more than 790 sarees and 1215 Mtrs cloth worth more than Rs. 8 lacs. These sarees were being smuggled from unfenced area of Muktapur in West Jainti Hills district of Meghalaya.
Similarly in another incident the troops of BSF deployed at Road head Pyrdwah in East Khasi Hills seized 340 Nos sarees worth more than Rs. 4 lacs. The Indian sarees are popular in Bangladesh markets. The smugglers were trying to take the sarees to Bangladesh to get handsome returns.
The Smugglers on both the sides of the border remain in constant touch with each other and keep tracking the movements of the BSF patrols to find a chance to smuggle consignments to Bangladesh. But troops of Border Security Force have made considerable seizures to foil such attempts by the smugglers.
The BSF in its special drive is continuously making the seizure of cattle in bordering area of Meghalaya being smuggled to Bangladesh. The BSF troops deployed at Nayabazar East Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya seized 12 cattle more than appx Rs. 2 lacs. The smugglers seeing the presence of the BSF managed to flee from the site. Since last weekend the BSF has seized 441 cattle worth more than Rs. 66 Lacs in 50 incidents from the international Border in Meghalaya.
