NGO’s from Garo Hills demand that the Govt of Meghalaya to initiate NRC exercise

Shillong, August 03: The NGO’s from Garo Hills the  GSU, AYWO, ADE and FKJGP, is apprehensive   that Bangladeshi from Assam might enter Garo Hills about the possible attempt of infiltration by illegal immigrants after the NRC exercise in Assam.

The leaders of Tura Garo Senior Citizens’ Forum, Garo Graduate Union, GSU, FKJGP, ADE and AYWO met the Deputy Commissioner and the Superintendent of Police, W.G.Hills District to take stock of the situation presented about the possible infiltration of people from Assam.

Mr  Winstone G. Momin, the President of TGSCF, urged upon the DC and the SP about the need to co-ordinate all the police stations and the blocks to check the infiltration attempt. The General Secretary of the Garo Graduate Union reminded the administration and the SP about the seriousness of the situation and the need to fulfil its duty to protect Garo hills and the Garo people.  The AYWO, ADE, GSU and FKJGP demanded that the members of the organisation be present at the checking of infiltrators.

The D.C. and the S.P. insisted that the government of Meghalaya is taking the issue seriously and they have alerted all the units under them as per the directions of the state government.  All units have been alerted to detect any possible infiltrators in the border areas and various police check points have been directed.

The NGO’s  are still apprehensive that the exercise of detection could be a panic response to the intensity of the prevailing situation thus presented by the government and so we will ever remain alert. Should we perceive that there is a lax in the exercise to detect we will be forced to direct our units all over Garo Hills to actively engage themselves in the detection process.

All the NGOs’ and Civil Societies’ units are being directed to detect infiltrators and illegal immigrants and we request the people to be alert. We are giving a warning to all non-tribals who enter Garo Hills to have a valid evidence of the entrance of their name in the NRC update of Assam.

The NGO’s demand that the government of Meghalaya initiate the NRC exercise in Meghalaya to detect, deport and detain illegal immigrants and take into account 1971 as the cut-off year. The NGO’s  are getting reports that three people have been detected at Dalu and five people in Rongjeng and a host of other reports that people with zero documents have been detected by their  members.

The NGO’s request the administration of all the districts of Garo Hills to further their efforts because we are sure that there is infiltration on a daily basis into Meghalaya. The Govt. Of Meghalaya to be stricter and intensify their efforts or the NGOs and Civil Societies will be forced to up the ante on our own for the greater benefit.
