Noise pollution in Shillong is increasing day by day particularly by unnecessary honking

Shillong, Feb 08: It has been brought to the notice of the District Magistrate, East Khasi Hills that many vehicle owners are using banned air horns and modified silencers in their vehicles thereby violating the NGT’s order and the Noise Pollution (Regulation and Control) Rules.

It has also been observed that the noise pollution in Shillong is increasing day by day particularly by unnecessary honking of motor vehicles.

Therefore, the District Magistrate, East Khasi Hills District has promulgated an Order under Section 144 CrPC prohibiting high density air horns, sale of public audio systems without sound limiters, honking or blowing of horns in Silence Zones, area comprising not less than 100 meters around hospitals, educational institutions, courts, religious places).

Honking of horns during night time between 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM in residential areas except during public emergency and continuous honking of airhorns by garbage collection vehicles (under Section 179(1), 190(2) and 194F of the Motor Vehicle (Amendment) Act, 2019.

Any violation of the above direction or non-compliance by the general public shall be viewed seriously and action will be taken under Section 188 IPC.
