Jowai, April 23: T. Lhundim Deputy General Manager Reserve Bank of India, Shillong said “it is very important to inculcate the habit of saving in the banks among the students of the country”. “Students are the future generation of our country so it is very important that we educate them about the importance of developing goo financial habit” Lhundim said in the Financial Literacy Campaign programe organized by RBI at Tpep-pale Secondary School, Jowai. He also added that in fact parents can children raise as much as fifty thousand rupees for their wards’ education if they save only Rs. 27 per day which will cumulate to fifty thousand in 5 year times. It only needs financial planning and not to mention that banks are also offering education for students who wishes to continue their studies Lhundin said.
Earlier Nabin Khakhlary Manager, RBI Shillong gave a power point presentation to educate the youth on how to distinguish fake currency from legal tender. On the question raised by the students whether fifty paisa coin are still legal because shoppers in Jowai refused to accept fifty paisa coin, Khakhlary response in affirmative and advice those present to return their fifty paisa coins to the banks if they want to exchange them. He also request the students to develope the habit not tamper, staple or write on any currency note.
RBI targeted that by 2016 at least one member in every family in the country should have a bank account and RBI has directed all Banks to encourage people to open bank accounts.
In another related event, Society for Urban and Rural Empowerment in Collaboration with the National Agriculture and Rural Development Bank, Jowai organized financial literacy campaign at Ksehrynchang village west Jaintia hills District. T.Thangkhiew District Development Manager NABARD, Martin Khongmuid Branch Manager Meghalaya Rural Bank, Khanduli Branch, P. Myria and B.S. Shylla spoke on the campaign.(SP News)
