Awareness programme on road safety held at Mahendraganj SWGH District

Ampati, April 15: The District Police and District Administration, South West Garo Hills, jointly organized an awareness programme on Road Safety and Traffic Rules for the general public at Mahendraganj Police Station on Thursday evening.

During the programme, officials of the district administration and traffic police officials enlightened the public about the various provisions of under Motor Vehicles Act and necessary precautions they should take for road safety and avoid road accidents.

It may be mentioned that most people in the rural areas are still unaware about Motor Vehicles Act and road safety rules and there has been high incidents of road accidents in Mahendraganj area alone during the period between 2012 and 2016. Therefore such meetings to generate awareness on road safety had been necessitated.

The public were also made aware about the ill effects of over-speeding, rash driving, drunken driving and overloading of goods and passengers. They were also urged to use seat belts while riding on four-wheelers and to always wear helmets while driving two-wheelers.

Besides the officials from the police and district administration, the programme was well attended by the gaonburas, senior citizens, drivers and youths of the area.
