Every state should have a welfare board for Animals as directed Supreme Court:Sahkhar

SHILLONG, July 14: The Department of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary will hold a one day workshop on July 16 at 11 am at Moreau Institute of Integral Training (MIIT).

Addressing newsmen here on Thursday, K.B. Sahkhar, Assistant Director of Animal Husbandry and  Veterinary informed that the starting point of the workshop will be in Shillong and later move out to the districts.

Stating that as per the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960 which also envisaged the establishment of Animal Welfare Board of India in 1962 in every state, he said, “The Supreme Court of India has directed all the states in the country to have a state welfare board. At the district level, there is the District Society of Prevention of cruelty to animals where the Deputy Commissioner of the district is the Chairman of the society.”

He added, “The general public need to act according to the law and constitute the Board. A section of the law makes a mention of the different kinds of cruelty meted to animals.”

Sahkhar stated that the state animal welfare board needs to be reconstituted and the workshop is being held for the first time to activate and sensitise the existing societies and give them directions.

Meanwhile, speaking on the role of headmen, W.Papang, Director of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary, said, “The headmen have a role to play in the society and implement the rules/act to sensitise the issue as stakeholders.”
