GNLA commander-in-chief escapes, one gun down by the Meghalaya Police

Tura, July 11: Meghalaya police today busted the Garo National
Liberation Army (GNLA) camp at a remote village in East Garo Hills and
gun downed a cadre.

In the operation led by Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) and CRPF’s
COBRA commandos stormed the GNLA camp at Adugre village, 20 km South of Williamnagar.

Williamnagar is located at a distance of 78 km from Tura. The camp located on the Adugre hilltop has been dismantled. At least 15 cadres, including GNLA commander-in-chief Sohan Shira was at the camp.

East Garo Hills SP, Davies Marak said, “We had specific information on
the presence of the militants, including Sohan D Shira and launched
the operation today morning”.

The slain cadre is yet to be identified. A cache of arms and ammunition, which included IEDs, rocket, grenade were recovered. Marak said details will be provided later as the team is yet to reach Williamnagar.

On June 23, GNLA camp was busted at Mikilsimgre village, which is just
about 3 km from today operation site, wherein police had gun down a
cadre and arrested two, including women, who is said to be girl friend
of a GNLA area commander Ajan Momin alias Jimmy.

In the operation a huge cache of arms and ammunition were recovered.
On July 3, nine A’chik Songna An’pachakgipa Kotok (ASAK) cadres were
arrested from Rongjeng and Williamnagar in East Garo Hills. Security forces are conducting regular flush out operation to neutralize insurgency in Garo hills.(SP News)
