India’s population 80 pc depends on agriculture:Ripnar Lyngdoh

Shillong, December 20: A two-day Crop Exhibition cum Competition 2016-17 under Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture Scheme was held in the office compound of the District Agriculture Officer, Laitlawsang on 19th and 20th December, 2016 wherein Smti R. Lyngdoh, Deputy Commissioner, South West Khasi Hills District, Mawkyrwat graced the closing function as Chief Guest. The programme was organized by the office of the District Horticulture Officer, South West Khasi Hills District, Mawkyrwat.

Speaking on the occasion, Smti Lyngdoh lauded the efforts of the Department for organizing such a meaningful programme which would benefit farmers on the long run. She however reiterated that these types of exhibitions serves as a platform wherein farmers could exchange their views and ideas and learn the skill and techniques through the exhibits displayed in the competition. She also informed that organic farming is now being practised throughout the world thereby encouraging farmers to turn to organic farming in order to protect our ecology, good health and sustainable farming. She said that 80% of India’s population depends on agriculture and therefore hopes that such type of farming will yield better results in future through patience, hardwork and dedication.

The Chief Guest also handed over the Prizes and Certificates to the winners in different categories. About 12 stalls have been put up in the exhibition and there were about 146 winners in the competition. 36 of them were placed in the 1st prize, another 36 in the 2nd prize, 32 of them were placed in the 3rd prize and 42 in consolation prizes.
