Shillong, August 23: Noted Mumbai-based journalist, editor and novelist Jerry Pinto stressed on the fact that new media and mostly social media was great way to communicate with each other but research has proven that it in fact can lead to various forms of bullying, mental health issues.
Mr Pinto was speaking at the seminar titled, ” New Media and Academia, Reaching the Mellennials”, which was organised by Martin Luther Christian University, held on August 23, 2018.
The seminar was chaired by Jerry Pinto, with presentations from Mr.Pradyot Deb Barman, publisher and editor of The Northeast Today , who talked on Experiences and analytics from The Northeast Today Magazine.
Dr Glenn C Kharkongor , Chancellor of MLCU presented a talk on ‘Where do youth obtain information from?’ and Dr Maribon Viray, faculty of the department of Counseling and Psychology delivered a presentation on Stories as syllabi and pedagogy.
The seminar was attended by students and faculty of the university and it was closed by a round of comments and discussions lead by Ms.Patricia Mukhim, editor of the Shillong Times.
Mr Pinto added that the rise in the use of social media has led to a lack of human interactions which in turn has led to isolated individuals who then suffer from depression or other similar ailments.
Ms Mukhim, while giving the closing comments added that though information is important but the analysis of information is more important. She further added that people should be weary of instant and fast news because there might have been a lack of research or fact checking when those are sent.
