NPP alleged there is levy sugar scam in Meghalaya, demand CBI inquiry

Shillong, June 13: The National People Party (NPP) alleged that there is a scam in the process of procuring sugar in the state of Meghalaya by awarding in the tender at the higher price which is beyond the open market price, the minister in charge food and civil supplies should resign and the issued should be handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) said James K Sangma  at the press conference in the party office.

The NPP will not only end up the issued in the state they will take up with the central Government on this sugar procuring by the state government at the exorbitant price. The piece of levy  Sugar in the open market is Rs.45/- per Kg of good quality but the government is procuring Rs.54.27 /- per kg of the third grade quality he alleged.

While highlighting the alleged sugar scam in the state of Meghalaya, Mr James said that the Government of India in 2014 has stop supplying levy sugar from the Food Corporation of India, but allowed state government to buy from the open market, but the government of India will pay subsidy only Rs. 18.50 /- per kg and the rest should be borne by the respective state.

Base on this, the state government, through food civil supplies department cal for the tender inviting suppliers wants to supply sugar to the government,  and fro the 2016 tender was called on 26th March and there are three bidders, Beta Edibles Processing Private Limited coated Rs.54270 per metric ton which come Rs. 54.27 /- per Kg, Doctor Frozen Food India Private  Limited coated Rs.55o50 per metric tome which come Rs.55.05/- per kg and S.S. Food Industries coated 56210 per metric tome which come to Rs.56.21/- per Kg.

This current year the government has awarded the supply of levy sugar in the state to Beta Edibles Processing Private Limited coated Rs.54270/-. The question argued by the NPP is that if the levy sugar can be purchase at Rs. 45/- per Kg why the state government is purchasing Rs.54.27/- per kg of levy sugar because the central government is paying subsidy only Rs.18.50/- per kg, and the consumer is paying Rs.20/- at the PDS fair price shop and the remaining amount has to be paid from the state exchanger.

The NPP said that in a year the state government is spending unnecessarily Rs.30/- cores from the state exchangers. To clear  that in the mind of the consumers the NPP demand that this alleged levy sugar scam should be handed over to the  CBI for investigation.
