Police Department has indentified some roads for widening, will submit to PWD

Shillong, February  13: The Hynniewtrep National Youth Front (HNYF) central body on Monday apprise the SP (Traffic) East Khasi Hills Nangkiew K. Syiem, on the grievances faced by the general public due to the growing traffic congestion in and around Shillong city.

Speaking to reporters after meeting the SP, K.S. Rani, vice president HNYF said, “The people in the city are facing many problems because of the growing traffic congestion and we have also put forward some suggestions from us to the SP with an aim to reduce the common traffic snarl in the city.”

He pointed out that the areas in the city commonly affected by the traffic congestion includes, Mawlai, Garikhana, Barik point, Civil Hospital, Malki point, Laitumkhrah, Nongthymmai area etc..

The HNYF has also urged the SP to identify proper embankment and disembarkment points for commuter vehicles to ease the traffic congestion in the city.

He informed that the SP has assured them that he will be taking their suggestions and examine the area’s most affected and come up with a proper solution to rectify the problem of traffic congestion.

“We have also suggested that places outside schedule areas like Police Bazaar etc.., the department should discuss with the state government to widen the roads to decongest the city,” he said.

Meanwhile, SP traffic Syiem informed that the department has indentified some roads for widening and will soon submit proposals to the Public Works Department (PWD).

Asked whether the recent traffic arrangements was a success in dealing with the problem of congestion in the city, he said, “The new traffic arrangements are new, hence it will be difficult for me to make a comment right now.”

It may be mentioned that recently the traffic department had implemented new traffic rules in which Hopkinson Road, Jacob’s Ladder Road and Boyce Road have been opened in reverse direction.
