The DCL called for the emergent meeting on Road Safety in Tura town

Shillong, April 12: In a bid to regulate and plan meticulously for decongestion of Tura town an emergent meeting of the District Level Committee on Road Safety was held at DRDA Conference Hall, West Garo Hills, Tura on 11th April, 2017.  The meeting was chaired by Superintendent of Police, West Garo Hills, Dr. M G Raghavendra Kumar along with Additional Deputy Commissioner and D C Incharge Mr. D D Shira, as most inputs and decisions were taken from the side of police department for traffic restrictions and planning in collaboration with the concerned line departments of the district like PWD (Roads), District Urban Planner, District Transport Officer, amongst others.

During the meeting Dr. Kumar raised important issues relating to the safety and security of pedestrians and commuters, parking, barricading, traffic regulation and management, lay byes and also shared his views and suggestions to promote road safety in the district. He also suggested to sensitize the people about changes in Motor Vehicle Act and the Rules and its implementation in the district.

Other points discussed in the meeting relates to issues of drunken driving, underage driving, speed limit in town areas and expediting permanent markings for parking, road signs, etc wherever necessary.

Mr. Shira advised the concerned departments to prepare and send the project proposals to the District Administration as early as possible in order to expedite necessary process which would ease traffic congestion in the town in future.

Traffic Incharge, Mr. N Rai reminded about the proposed one way at Araimile Tri- Junction which has already been enforced with entry from the junction and exit via Araimile church in front of  ITI junction. Another one way at Hawakhana junction with entry into District Council Office through Jerusalem via Forest Department, GHADC, Tura and exit from Tura Government College on the right, which shall go down to the main road in front of the Sangma and Sangma Showroom and the other on the left, near Late Capt. Sangma’s residence Tura and other prominent junctions like Ringrey and Chandmary is yet to be enforced, he informed.

It may be mentioned that the other reasons for congestion as stated during the meeting is due to Parents dropping their children to schools since few prominent schools are located along the main road and for which Mr. Shira has come to a decision to initiate the respective heads of the schools to provide transport facilities for children so as to avoid traffic congestion especially during school hours. Further, Mr. Shira seeks the co-operation of all concerned department and people to support and work together for the welfare of the people of the region in particular.
