Shillong, September 03: Director General of Assam Rifles Lieutenant General HJS Sachdev, PVSM, AVSM, SM, ADC felicitated Dipa Karmakar and the Specially Abled Children of Ferrando Rehabilitation Centre in a glittering ceremony organised by Assam Rifles at Agartala.
General Sachdev felicitated Dipa Karmakar, who has today become a household name in India after executing the ‘Produnova’ vault to perfection at the Rio Olympics 2016. She has also been conferred with the prestigious Khel Ratna award which the 23-year-old gymnast received from the President of India Pranab Mukherjee on National Sports Day.
He Sachdev hailed Dipa Karmakar, who became the first Indian woman gymnast to qualify for Olympics Games, saying she brought laurels for the country by her sheer determination.
It was a matter of great pride and honour for the Assam Rifles personnel to have Dipa Karmakar interacting with them and their families. The Director General awarded the athlete by presenting her a cheque of Rs 2 lakh and also presented furniture to Ferrando Rehabilitation Centre.
The Force had earlier sponsored 25 children of the Rehabilitation Centre on a National Integration Tour. The Specially abled children performed a beautiful amalgamation of Five Tribal dances of Tripura which was applauded by all.
Director General of Assam Rifles Lieutenant General HJS Sachdev is on a two day visit to the State, during which he will also be meeting the Governor of Tripura Mr Tathagata Roy and Mr Manik Sarkar, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Tripura.
