Shillong, April 04: The Khasi Student Union observed today “Ka Sngi Kyrsiew Ri” the awakening day by marching to the office of the AMD at Nongmynsong where they burn effigy in protest against the proposed Uranium mining in Domiasait in West Khasi Hills District.
In this awakening hundreds of the KSU members take part, from various circle and unit of the organization, along with the traditional attire were marching from Umkaliar to the office of the AMD at Nongmynsong. The theam of the Awakning day for this year is to opposed Uranium mining from the state.
The president of the KSU MR Lambokstarwell Marngar, in his speech at the Uranium Corporation of India Limited (UCIL) has committed illegal activities in the state, he alleged that the UCIL has taken lives of many people at Domiasiat. Till date, children and other people are suffering from one or the other physical deformities, due to radiation effects and mining activities.
While criticizing the AMD for floating tenders for drilling uranium to companies, Marnagar said, If the office of AMD and UCIL attempts to forcefully mine uranium, they will declare that AMD and UCIL are the worst enemies of the indigenous community.
He informed that despite repeated petitions to stop uranium mining, UCIL has pursued its attempts to mine uranium. “They think we are non-living things but once battle starts and if there is bloodshed, UCIL, AMD will take the responsibility for the violence.”
Lashing out at UCIL as an enemy which intends to divide the unity of the community, he said that there are pro-uranium groups working behind closed doors, giving impetus to the UCIL.He urged the pro-uranium groups to work for the welfare of the state and join their voice of anti-uranium.
Others who spoke on this awakening day include the former KSU president Mr Daniel Khyriem, and the NESO chairman Mr Samuel B Jyrwa, in their speech these two former KSU leaders also opposed to the Uranium mining in the state.
