Shillong May 30: The Director of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Dr. B. Rijal said banning of cow slaughter is a subject and the department is awaiting government direction for any instruction.

We learn that there is an instruction issue by the central government by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change in accordance with the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960. But since this is a state subject we are waiting government direction.

The state like Meghalaya where people are consuming meat, and with different set of rules and regulation, we have the state government, the District Council and the Syiem or the Hima’s where they control  the market and what most important state government has to notify in the Gazette.

The Director said people should not be panic on the issue because this is a state subject and the government is encouraging people to go in a big way in livestock rearing so that will be self sufficient in meat production and this will not only be stop flight of capital but also provides employment.
