Shillong, February 05: The Silver Jubilee of the Kharmuti Clan, Shilyngwiar Kur Kharmuti, was celebrated with great fervor at Tynring Village, where hundreds of relatives and well-wishers gathered for the momentous occasion.
The event saw the participation of prominent figures, including the Chief Guest, Pyniaidsuk Pyngrope, Lyngdoh Raij Nongkrem; R.L. Kharpran, President of Synjuk Ki Rangbahkur; and several esteemed dignitaries such as Raphael Warjri, Will Shylla, Rev. Augustine Kharmuti, Sister Margareth Kharmuti, and other delegates of the Kharmuti clan.
The bi-annual gathering, which commemorates the Kharmuti clan’s foundation, took place on a significant milestone this year—marking 25 years since its inception in 2000. The event featured vibrant cultural celebrations, with both young and old members of the clan participating in performances that honored their traditions and heritage.
During his address, Pyniaidsuk Pyngrope, Lyngdoh Raij Nongkrem, recounted the origin of the Kharmuti clan, tracing its roots back to a noble and compassionate act by his maternal uncle.
The story began when his uncle, with a heart full of kindness, brought an orphaned girl named Muti from Bengal and raised her as his own. As Muti grew, the uncle arranged for her marriage to a young man from Mawlat, Long Suting. Together, they became the founding parents of the Kharmuti clan, giving birth to six children—five daughters and one son—who would go on to shape the legacy of the family.
The event also saw speeches from several clan members, including R.L. Kharpran, the President of Synjuk Ki Rangbahkur; Rev. Augustine Kharmuti; Municidora Kharmuti; Phaiwill Kharmuti, the founding General Secretary of the Kharmuti clan; and Mollington Kharmuti, the editor of the clan’s commemorative souvenir. Mollington Kharmuti gave a brief but heartfelt speech about the significance of the souvenir, which was published in honor of the Silver Jubilee.
To culminate the celebration, the attendees were treated to a series of cultural performances by different units of Shilyngwiar Kur Kharmuti, showcasing the unity and vibrancy of the clan, and reflecting the rich heritage that has been passed down through generations.
The Silver Jubilee was not just a celebration of the past 25 years but also a reminder of the enduring bonds that tie the Kharmuti family together, inspiring pride in their shared history and optimism for the future.
