Leutanant Gen Ranbir Singh retired from service as DG of Assam Rifles

Shillong, April 02:Leutanant Gen Ranbir Singh PVSM, AVSM, SM, superannuated from the appointment of Director General Assam Rifles on 31 Mar 2014, after an illustrious career spanning 39 years of exemplary service to the Nation.

An alumnus of the Lawrence School, Sanawar, Lt Gen Ranbir Singh joined NDA, Khadakwasla and was commissioned from IMA, Dehradun in the BIHAR Regiment as a third generation Officer on 21 Dec 1975.

During his illustrious career, the General Officer held numerous high profile and sensitive appointments both in Command as well as Staff.  He commanded an Infantry Battalion in one of the most active Counter Insurgency areas in Jammu & Kashmir while insurgency was at its peak, a Mountain Brigade on sensitive Indo China Border in Sikkim and an Infantry Division at Meerut.

Having attended a number of prestigious courses to include Defence Service Staff College Wellington, and National Defence College, New Delhi, the officer has tenated important operational appointments of Brigade Major, Colonel General Staff, Brigadier General Staff and Major General General  Staff in different  Formations in all parts of the Country.

Nominated to represent the Country abroad, Lt Gen Singh, was posted at Military Training Institute in Bhutan and had the distinction of being the Defence Attache at the Indian Embassy, Beijing, China. With over 18 years experience in Chinese Affairs, the Officer is considered as an expert on China.

During his tenure as Director General Assam Rifles, the General Officer steered the Force successfully to greater heights be it Operation, Training or Administration.  Known for his professional acumen, the General ensured supreme operational efficiency of the Force, wherein the Force was equipped with latest weapon systems, surveillance equipment, communication as well as IT equipments.

With focus on soldier’s welfare, the General was singularly responsible for initiating numerous welfare measures of all Ranks of Assam Rifles and their families.  A staunch environmentalist, he personally ensured ‘Green Initiatives’ in the Force to include plantation of trees, water harvesting and reducing carbon footprints for future sustenance of the environment.

Recipient of Sena Medal for Gallantry, the officer has also been conferred with the coveted Ati Vishist Seva Medal and Param Vishist Seva Medal for his remarkably sustained and dedicated service to the Nation.(SP News)
