Williamnagar, September 17: In order to motivate the people of the state to preserve trees the government under the leadership of the Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma has come up with a unique initiative, the promotion of black pepper cultivation. Informing this at a programme for the promotion of black pepper cultivation at Rongjeng C&RD Block, East Garo Hills Parliamentary Secretary, PWD etc Cherak W Momin said that the initiative will not only save trees but also drastically change the socio-economic condition of the people of the region.
Organized by the East Garo Hills District Horticulture Officer the black pepper cultivation promotion programme aimed at disseminating information on the environmental and economical benefits of black pepper cultivation.
Momin arrived as the Chief Guest at the gathering in the absence of Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma who could not take off by Chopper from Shillong due to inclement weather.
Addressing the gathering he stated that Black Pepper grown beside supporting trees is considered a very valuable commodity fetching around rupees 700 to rupees 800 in the market and added that its aggressive cultivation will not only usher in socio-economic development but also help in preserving trees. Stressing on the medicinal and culinary value of black pepper Momin urged the people to partner with the government in the initiative to usher in prosperity and development into the region.
Momin later distributed high yield Panniyur 1 variety black pepper saplings on behalf of Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma to 83 villages under Rongjeng C&RD Block.
Rongjeng MLA and Parliamentary Secretary, Fisheries etc who also attended the gathering urged the people to sincerely embrace the scheme.
Among others who spoke at the occasion were Rongjeng C&RD Block Development Officer Dr W C R Marak and District Horticulture Officer Bijoy G Momin.
