Shillong, July, 24: In our effort to bring back some greenery in the district as well as the state as a whole and sensitize the public the youth about the green cause, the EKH district has planned a Mega Tree Plantation Festival under the CM’s Youth for Green Campaign under the umbrella prog of Mission Green of the IBDLP.
This is being organised by the Office of the Deputy Commissioner, East Khasi Hills District, Government of Meghalaya in collaboration with the Forest Department, Government of Meghalaya and the Soil and Water Conservation Department, Government of Meghalaya.
The aim is to Plant 7,00,700 number of Trees in a Single Day i.e., on the July 30th 2014 in East Khasi Hills District, Meghalaya. At Multiple locations identified in all the 8 rural development blocks of the District.The month of July is also celebrated throughout the country as Van Mahotsav.
The effort has been considered by the Limca Book of Records for their Edition of 2016. However the final call and decision would be taken only after the plantation drive is over on that day and final figures are available.
We have also contacted the Guinness World Record Authorities and feedback from them is awaited.
Significance of the Day: International Friendship Day is celebrated throughout the world on July 30. Keeping in mind this, the theme of the Plantation Drive is to Pledge Friendship with Nature and to Pledge to Make Meghalaya Green.
The plantation will be done by the public at large, by local communities, government servants and college and school children which will make it largely a people’s led plantation drive.
On this occasion we appeal to all and encourage them to take up plantation at their own respective locations as a part of the drive OR come to the designated location to take part in the plantation drive organised by the dist admn. The Chief Minister will launch the festival from Leit Thiepbah near Mawphlang Sacred Grooves on 30th july at 9AM along with other dignitaries/invitees
The media will play a very important role the entire effort and coverage, as the record authorities would take into account the independent evidences/reports also from media.

Also please highlight the “Maintenance” part of it as it is often criticised. To ensure that the plants survive we have adopted TWO pronged approach:
A five year financial sanction for annual maintenance which will be funded and supervised by the dept concerned and done by the active involvement of the community who has given the land for plantation and who would be responsible to maintain the plants for these years and beyond.
A social agreement signed between govt and the community on various aspects of implementation.(SP News)
