Shillong, March 07: In pursuance of the directions of the Supreme Court Committee on Road Safety (SCCoRS), the Government of Meghalaya has announced the Road Safety target for the year 2025.
To achieve the stringent target of 10% reduction in both road accidents and fatalities compared to the figure to the preceding year, the Transport Department will undertake the following measures, among others.
Enhanced Enforcement, strict enforcement of traffic rules and regulations, including speed limits, driving under the influence of alcohol and adherence to lane discipline.
Infrastructure Improvemen, continuous, improvement of road infrastructure, including the identification and rectification of black spots, installation of proper signage and enhancement of road markings.
Public Awareness Campaigns: Intensified public awareness campaigns focusing on road safety education, responsible driving practices and the importance of adhering to traffic rules.
Driver Training and Licensing, stricter driver training and licensing procedures, including refresher courses for commercial vehicle drivers and the promotion of defensive driving techniques.
Technology Integration, implementation of advanced technologies for traffic management, including electronic monitoring and enforcement of road safety.
Collaboration and Coordination, enhanced collaboration with other relevant departments, agencies and stakeholders including the Police Department, Public Works Department and NGOs.
Data analysis and monitoring, rigorous data analysis and monitoring of accident trends to identify critical areas and implement targeted interventions. Quarterly reports on the enforcement activities and actions taken under this directive shall be submitted to the Transport Department/Commissioner Transport.
Emergency response improvement, enhancement of emergency response systems to ensure prompt medical assistance to accident victims.
All concerned departments, agencies and stakeholders are directed to extend their full cooperation and support in achieving this critical target.
